Mr Ross Fairley

Ross Fairley is Co-Head of the Burges Salmon Environmental Law Unit having been a partner at Allen & Overy. He and his team focus on advising companies and businesses on environmental compliance. Ross has advised in the area for over 15 years and is recognised by independent directories as a leader in the field.

Mr Peter Kellett

Peter Kellett has a science degree and a masters in environmental law. He trained as a solicitor and worked in the City and Brussels advising upon Environmental Law. He joined the Environment Agency in 1997 and worked first in its operational and then in its Head Office legal teams working on a wide range of regulatory issues. In 2002 Peter took a policy role in the Environment Agency as the Manager responsible for IPPC policy. He joined the joint DEFRA/WAG/Environment Agency Environmental Permitting Programme team in April 2005. He wrote ''Better regulation': what the modernising agenda might mean for UK environmental laws'; (2006) 18 ELM and is a co-author of Pollution Prevention and Control - the New Regime. Peter Chairs the UK Environmental Lawyers Association (www.ukela.org), the leading charity which aims to make the law work for a better environment.

Professor Richard Macrory

Richard Macrory is a barrister and professor at the Faculty of Laws, University College, London where he is director of the Centre for Law and the Environment. He has been a board member of the Environment Agency, and was a long standing member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. He is a Patron of the UK Environmental Law Association, and in 2005/6 Professor Macrory was appointed by the Cabinet Office to lead the Review on Regulatory Sanctions. All the recommendations in his final report 'Regulatory Justice: Making Sanctions Effective' published at the end of 2006 have been accepted by Government. Earlier this year he was appointed an Honorary QC for his work on the development of environmental law.

Lord Daniel Brennan QC

Lord Daniel Brennan QC specialises in commercial law, international business issues, public and private international law, and international arbitration. During 1999, he was Chairman of the Bar of England and Wales, and in 2000 British lawyers voted him Barrister of the Year. In May 2000 the Queen appointed him a life peer and member of the House of Lords.

Ms Valerie Fogleman

Valerie Fogleman, who is a US attorney as well as a solicitor, is a Consultant at Stevens & Bolton LLP and a Professor of Law at Cardiff University. She specialises in all aspects of environmental law. Valerie is named as a leading environmental lawyer in Chambers & Partners, the Legal 500 and the International Who's Who of Environmental Lawyers.

Mr Richard Wald QC

Richard Wald is a member of 39 Essex Street where he practices in all aspects of Planning, Environmental, Local Government, Compulsory Purchase, Highways and associated areas of Administrative Law. He is the General Editor of Sweet and Maxwell's Encyclopaedia of Environmental Law and the co-author of Butterworth's Highways Law and Practice (2002). He is a rated as a top junior in the areas of planning law and environmental law by Planning Magazine, Chambers and Legal 500.

Ms Justine Thornton

Justine Thornton is a barrister at 39 Essex Street. She specializes in environmental and planning law and related fields of public, commercial, insolvency, local government, human rights, health and safety and EC and international law. Justine is a member of the Attorney-General’s Panel of Counsel, appointed to act for the Government (C Panel). Prior to joining 39 Essex Street, she worked for Allen & Overy LLP, Simmons & Simmons and the European Commission Environment Department. Publications include Sweet and Maxwell textbook on environmental law (first and second editions) and 'The Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004', Law Society Legislation Guides. She is General Editor of the Sweet and Maxwell Encyclopaedia of Environmental Law and Case Law Editor of the Journal of Environmental Law.

Mr William Wilson

William Wilson is a Barrister with the Environmental Law Unit at Burges Salmon in Bristol. He worked on negotiations on the REREACH Regulation for two years with metals, mining, aerospace and other industries, and advises many companies and trade associations on its implementation. He has given many REREACH presentations and workshops, helped plan the European Commission's alloys workshop with industry, and has prepared training materials on REREACH and the GHS for amongst others the EU and the Chinese government.

Mr James McNally

James McNally is a Technical Director of Due Diligence based in the Golder Associates London office. He has over 20 years of environmental consulting experience and was previously employed by a global insurance company where he was responsible for managing the environmental consultancy division. In November 2007 James was invited by the British Embassy to present to representatives of the Turkish Government and NGOs on environmental due diligence best practice as part of the UKs commitment to the Lisbon Treaty.

Mr Martin Edwards

Martin Edwards. After many years in practice as a solicitor in both local government and private practice, latterly as a partner and Head of Planning and Environmental Law at Titmuss Sainer & Webb/Dechert he transferred to the Bar in 1995 and joined the leading specialist planning Chambers of Lionel Read QC before moving to 39 Essex Street in 2002. Drawing on his combined practical experience as a solicitor and barrister, Martin acts for a wide range of clients from both the private and public sectors, mainly in the fields of planning, environmental and compulsory purchase. Martin is recommended for Environment by Chambers and Partners 2004/5 and 2003/4 where he is described as 'recommended for contaminated land and was involved in one of the first test cases. He also undertakes a number of pure environmental cases including toxic torts'. He is listed as a Leading Junior for Planning in The Legal 500 (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 editions). He featured in Legal Business Legal Experts Report for Planning and is recognised as a leader in the field by Planning magazine in 2007.
